Scarce First NB of East St. Louis, Illinois $50 1902 Plain Back

East Saint Louis, IL - $50 1902 Plain Back Fr. 683 The First NB Ch. # 11596 PCGS Extremely Fine 40.
Southern Illinois Nationals were eagerly pursued in the Newman Part VI sale in April 2015. This East St. Louis bank issued only $50s and $100s, in both large and small size, before closing in 1934, and this Newman Collection note is an attractive, high-denomination example. John Sherman, who served as Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of State, is featured on the left face. G.F.C. Smillie's engraving of Mechanics and Navigation, after the design by Ostrander Smith, is on the back. Only light wear is found on this bright, well-inked $50 that retains dark printed signatures. This is a beautiful example and superior to the $50 we sold in January 2016 for $1,057.50 (PMG Very Fine 25 staining).

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
