Fort Smith, AR - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 469 The American NB Ch. # (S)3634
The "Circus Poster" layout is the most eye catching and collectible design in the $5 Brown Back series. This note is problem free with wonderful penned signatures and crisp surfaces. As a type, Brown Backs from the state are composed of 21 examples with 13 being $5 notes, the majority from here. Fort Smith began as an outpost with the original fort being built in 1817 and abandoned in 1824. Another fort followed in 1838. Fort Smith's most famous citizen was US District Judge Isaac Parker known as "the hanging judge" for handing down eight death sentences in his first term with six criminals being hanged in one day.
