    Replacement Large Size $5 National

Dickinson, ND - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 598 The Dakota National Bank Ch. # (W)7663 PCGS Choice New 63PPQ.
One of only eight large documented on this rare bank that went into receivership on February 7, 1924. This example is the highest graded note on this bank. Embossing is easily observed on the back plus the purple rubber stamped signatures of Cashier V.W. Maser and President S.M. Ferris are noticed. They served in these two positions during the years of 1918-19. Our observations also tell us that this is a large size National replacement note. The BEP used a distinctive old style font in the 1903-20 era to produce replacement notes with make-up sheets that have identical serial numbers as the sheets that were being replaced. The replacement sheets were made with the help of a "paging machine." The earlier font for replacements has a "tighter" appearance when compared to the later font. The replacement in this lot has a "droopy" 2 digit in the bank serial number and a "hunchback" 3 digit in the Treasury serial number. The other digits in the serial numbers are also of the earlier font for replacements, but those other digits do not have catchy nicknames. For additional information on this subject see blogs on the website and also the article in Paper Money, Society of Paper Money Collectors, Vol. LI, No. 5, Whole No. 281, September/October April 2012, pages 378-384, "Identification of Series 1882 and 1902 National Bank Replacement Notes Printed in the 1903-1915 Period." The years have been adjusted to 1903-20 since the article was written. Nonetheless, we have in this lot a rare National that is also a replacement.
