    Description

Montrose, CO - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 598 The Montrose NB Ch. # (W)7288
This is by far the scarcer of the two banks chartered here, with only four large notes reported, none of which have been offered at public sale in the past eight years. The appearance of this note and its sheet mate back in 2006 caused a near riot amongst Colorado collectors, with the first of the two selling for more than $25,000 in our Central States sale that year. Prices have since retreated to more sane and defensible levels, with the last offering in 2008 realizing just under $5500. Lovely PCGS Very Fine 30PPQ, with bright white paper, bold inks, and terrific eye appeal.
