    Very Rare Macerated Airplane

    Spirit of St. Louis
This is a 3 1/2" long macerated "Spirit of St. Louis," a macerated replica of the single-seat custom built high-wing single engine monoplane flown by Charles Lindbergh in his prize-winning May 1927 flight from New York to Paris. In 1919, a wealthy hotel owner by the name of Raymond Orteig offered a $25,000 prize for the first nonstop New York to Paris flight made within five years. The technology at the time did not allow such a flight, but when the prize expired, Orteig repeated the offer for another five-year period. Although the technology was marginal, at least five other attempts were made of this flight prior to Lindbergh. The result was six deaths and a number of serious injuries. Lindbergh's flight originated in Garden City, New York, and he arrived in Paris 33 hours later. He took off on May 20, and landed in Paris on May 21, 1927. This is one of the latest-produced macerated pieces. It was made of highly refined, light gray macerated. And we believe it to be one of the pieces offered with the point-of-purchase sign that also appears in this sale. The label covers the top of the wing and reads, "'Spirit of St. Louis' made of United States macerated paper money at Wash. D.C. Estimated $3000." We are familiar with only four examples of this macerated item, two of which are in this sale.
