1843 25 cents Republic of Texas Exchequer Note, Good. Cr-A11, R.11. An original example of the famous Exchequer series of notes, so called because they were payable in Exchequer Bills. Any specimen of this issue is extremely rare, and it is estimated that only 10 to 15 are known to have survived in all denominations. This specimen is heavily worn and is rough in places, and there is a large ragged tear in the left end. The note is nearly completely intact, however, and the design elements are still bold and clear. The serial number, date of issue, and the signatures are all easily readable.
As any serious collector of Texas financial memorabilia knows, the importance of this offering cannot be overstated. This series was authorized by an Act of the Texas Congress on January 29, 1842, and careful records were kept of their issue and all redeemed specimens were destroyed. Only $13,208.29 worth of these notes remained outstanding by 1852, and certainly most of those have been redeemed, lost, or destroyed in the intervening century and a half. A period of several years may elapse between offerings of this note, or of any other denomination in the series. This item is certain to inspire spirited bidding, and one must remember when bidding for such an item that any current price references may be "thrown out the window." The next published price guide will most likely list the winning bid in this sale as the current market value; therefore this note is worth whatever the highest bidder is willing to pay, and he alone will own it.
