Treasury of the United States Second of Transfer $2500 June 1, 1858
A document authorizing the transfer of $2500 to the Ass't Treasurer at San Francisco from the Ass't Treasurer in New York. An attractive, detailed vignette of the Capitol is seen on this piece produced by Toppan, Carpenter & Co. This example is far more desirable than the previous and only piece we had handled which was Very Good and had areas of paper loss along with splits and had also been backed. That piece sold for $322 in August 2010. This example is Very Fine with a small edge tear at the bottom margin near center and a small area of ink erosion near the center of the note. Unlike the other example, this document was signed by (Thomas) Howell Cobb (1815-68), who signed as Secretary of the Treasury during Buchanan's administration. Just a few years later, he would become one of the founders of the Confederacy. Cobb's portrait can be found on $20 Obsoletes from the Manufacturers Bank of Macon, GA. Several notations are also present on the back of this example. A wonderful piece of history.
