Naval Department Letter from Secretary of the Navy Paul Hamilton Not graded.
Paul Hamilton served as Governor of South Carolina and later as Secretary of the Navy under James Madison. Under his leadership, the US Navy achieved several remarkable victories against the mighty Royal Navy during the first few months of the War of 1812. John Trippe was a Lieutenant who commanded ships Enterprise and Vixen. He died from yellow fever on his way from Cuba to New Orleans a mere two months after the date of this letter. The header of this letter is "Navy Department / 7 May 1810" and is written as follows:

I have been informed by Lieut. Ludlow, that Doc. Brown wishes to be removed from the Vixen to a larger vessel and that Doc. Blair is anxious to go with you to Newerhaus in the Vixen - There is not at this time any larger vessel to which Doc. Brown could be ordered, but if he should chose a furlough and take his chance of being attached to a larger vessel, and if Doc. Blair can join the Vixen in his place by the time she in ay be ready to sail, you may furlough Doc. Brown and order Doc. Blair to join you - inform me of your proceedings, and before you sail send me a roll of your officers. / Your most H.S. / Paul Hamilton / addressed to John Trippe Comm. Vixen, Philadelphia
