Letter Written by a Solider from "Camp Near Richmond" Friday November 11, 1864. Not Graded.
Written in ink that is quite light in places, but wholly legible. It has not faded, but was written lightly. It is two pages on legal size paper. The letter mentions engagements and troop actions. He also talks about several officers being replaced because of battle wounds. "First Captain was wounded and replaced by First Lieutenant from another company who went out and got wounded in the foot and ankle and had his leg amputated. Gangrene set in and they amputated two or three times and finally killed him. He was replaced by another lieutenant and during the next battle he was shot through the heart and died instantly." He goes on to talk about action at Petersburg and being on picket every night or in the trenches. Difficult reading due to the light ink, but well worth the time to transcribe in detail.
