    Life-size Macerated George Washington Bust

    Huge George Washington Macerated Bust.
The bust itself stands 19 inches high and is on top of a two-and-a-half-inch wooden plinth. The macerated appears to be post-1908, but there are several random and clearly original pieces of currency present. It is hollow and light but appears solid and heavy. Unfortunately, George has had several breaks and repairs to his face, leaving his left profile perfect and his right profile perfectly acceptable but somewhat less than perfect. One of these appeared at an ANA show about 15 years ago with a typed letter dating it to 1932 and presenting it as a gift to the designer of the Washington Quarter. The dealer who handled it has now passed away, and we have no idea if this is the same piece or an identical one. No paperwork accompanies, but whatever its source or original purpose, it is a great piece of macerated currency that appears to have been sculpted by hand. The ANA example was priced at $7500 and it did sell, but this cataloger was not privy to the sale price. That piece was perfect and this is not, but it may well be the same piece, damaged subsequent to its original sale. Our estimate is a pure guess which could prove to be well off the mark in either direction.
