    Description

Group of Seal and Miscellaneous Die Proofs by Smillie Ten Examples
James Smillie, during the course of his years with ABNC, did a number of corporate and national seals as well as some other miscellaneous subjects. Ten such die proofs, printed on India paper and mounted on die-sunk card stock comprise this group. All are in nice original condition unless otherwise noted.
Die proof of the logo of the First National Bank of the City of New York, further designated 784 / AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. N.Y. below the vignette. A penciled notation identifies James Smillie as the engraver
Die proof of the seal of the Vermont Historical Society, further designated VERMONT ARMS / 746 / AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. N.Y. below the vignette. A penciled notation identifies James Smillie as the engraver.
Die proof of the globe surrounded by electrical apparatus and lightning bolts. A penciled notation identifies James Smillie as the engraver
Die proof of the globe, featuring the African continent. A penciled notation identifies James Smillie as the engraver
Die proof of an avenue formed by palm trees, further designated as ALLEY OF PALMS / 654 / AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. N.Y. A penciled notation identifies James Smillie as the engraver. Used on the 1870 Brazil 2 Mil Reis issue (P-A245).
An untitled die proof of what appears to be a European royal coat of arms. A penciled notation identifies James Smillie as the engraver.
An unusual die proof of a corporate logo for a firm composed of apparently eight members of the Seligman family. A penciled notation identifies James Smillie as the engraver
Progress proof and a final die proof of the arms of Argentina, further designated as 751 / AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. N.Y. below the vignette on the final die proof. A penciled notation identifies James Smillie as the engraver. The progress proof lacks a number of details in the shield and its frame. This vignette was used for Argentina 1873 issues from the Banco Nacional (Pick S657-S659)
Die proof designated ARMS OF ITALY / NO. 2A / AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. N.Y. A cut down version of this vignette was used on the Banca Romana 5 Lire and 10 Lire notes of 1872 (Pick S273 and S274)
