James Smillie engraved vignettes covering a wide range of subjects. All of these die proofs are printed on India paper mounted on die-sunk card stock and are in nice original condition unless otherwise noted. This group comprises:
Untitled die proof of a vignette known as Steer's Head with a penciled notation below the image "After Paul Potter / Unfinished". This vignette was used on the back of the 1870 One Peso issue of the Banco Entre-Riano (Pick S1661) and Bank of Toronto $50 (Pick S689).
Untitled die proof of the United States Capitol, depicting it before the old dome was removed in 1856 as part of the renovation work, designed to give the Capitol a larger center dome, which was not fully completed until 1863.
Two untitled die proofs depicting a rail station and yard on a river. Usage and vintage are undetermined.
Untitled die proof of ship building scene. Usage and vintage are undetermined.
Two untitled die proofs depicting a scene from what is today Yellowstone National Park. The title of the vignette is Yellowstone Park. There is known usage of this vignette on checks of the First National Bank of Helena, MT ca. 1866-96
Untitled vignette of large city with snow capped mountain in the distance. Usage and vintage are undetermined. A faint smudge on the right margin of the card.
Untitled die proof of the Great Seal of the State of Florida (ca. 1868) as used on Series 1882 Brown Back national bank notes from the state.
Die proof designated ARMS OF COLORADO / 692 / AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. N.Y. Minor corner tip bend.
Two die proofs, one untitled and one designated LOCOMOTIVE No. 15 / C-241 / AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO. N.Y. Usage and vintage are undetermined.
