Description

$5 Confederate Chemicography Note, Choice CU. In an effort to reduce counterfeiting of Confederate currency, an agent was sent to Europe in 1863 to arrange for the firm of Straker & Sons to produce a more uniform currency that could not be as easily counterfeited. The plates were produced but were confiscated when the ship bringing them back was captured by Northern naval forces blockading southern ports. The plates were supposedly produced by a chemical and possibly photographic process, but no real notes were ever produced. Designs were produced for the $5 through $500 denominations and were to have been used to print the 1864 issues. This note is a reprint from these plates and would be a nice addition to any CSA collection.
