    Rare Naramore's Detector Display Broadside

Framed 1866 "Naramore's United States Treasury and National Bank Note Detector..." Broadside.
A rarely encountered complete display board broadside titled at the top and with all 18 Naramore photographic detector cards on the face. The Naramore detectors were created with the permission of the United States Treasury Department National Currency Bureau (later, the BEP) and were produced from Treasury Department Proofs. The nine initial Legal Tender denominations, $1 to $1,000 and Original Series National Bank Notes, $1 to $1,000 are used. The board is approximately 10.5 by 13.5 inches (now inside a nice wood frame and under glass) with glazing on both sides in order to show the verso authorizations by both the Treasury and Mr. Naramore of Derby, Connecticut. This item is not graded, but there is staining on the $2 and $20 Legal Tenders. There is also an approximate two inch vertical bottom edge tear between the $100 and $500 Nationals. The original top suspension hole eyelet is visible under the glass and there are a couple of pieces of old tape on the verso. Also, the original string for hanging is not present. We have handled only two of these displays previously. The first brought $3,450 in September, 2009 and the second was the Eric Newman example that realized $3,995 in January, 2017. The broadsides are many times rarer than the individual Naramore cards or boxed sets. This is a great opportunity to obtain an attractive display. Included with this framed broadside is an article that appeared in Paper Money, the Society of Paper Money Collectors, Vol. XXXVI, No. 1, Whole No. 187, January/February 1997, pages 15-19, "The Celebrated and Elusive Naramore Bank Note Detector Cards."
