Dog Lying in a Sphinx-Like Pose
Clearly a very early piece, with a ruff surface and many small pieces of currency visible. On its bottom, there is a completely legible label. The dog and his base measure 5 1/2" long and just under 3" high. The surfaces of the dog itself have been handled, which has created smooth, shiny spots. It appears as though it might possibly have been utilized as a paper weight, and was constantly being picked up and put back down. A side story on this particular piece is that when this cataloger purchased it at a Long Beach show over 20 years ago, Steve Ivy was standing nearby. He asked to see what I had, and his comment stuck with me. He said, "I understand the historic interest of macerated currency, but it always looks to me like something that someone's niece made at summer camp and gave to them that they now can't throw away, because it was a gift from their niece."
