Description

A pair of progress proofs of political bigwig Marcus Alonzo Hanna, Ohio Senator and Chairman of the Republic Party 1896-1904. The engraved portrait measures approximately two and three-fourth inches by two and one-fourth inches on India paper mounted on card. The earlier, unfinished die state has pencil notations in G.F.C. Smillie's hand identifying the subject and calling him "Maker of Wm. B. McKinley." Another pencil notation in Smillie's hand indicates the portrait to be die number 6195. This proof bears the reverse backstamp 123486. The vignette is in excellent condition. The card is vey lightly foxed not affecting the vignette. The latter die state is indicated in a pencil notation in Smillie's hand as being a final proof. The notation reads "Last 21 July 1904." The reverse blue backstamp reads 136698. This vignette and card are very lightly foxed.
