Scarce & Attractive Fr. 154
Fr. 154 $50 1878 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 25.
A very scarce Friedberg number with the census standing at only nineteen, including this attractive example. It's a note which has been in our consignor's holdings since its last appearance at public sale some twenty five years ago. Benjamin Franklin's portrait was used on this large size design long before its appearance on other Federal currency. The other portrait is of Liberty dressed as Columbia at far right. Fr. 154 is one of three Friedberg numbers of this design that includes two large "L's" on the face and it is also easily the second rarest of the trio. PMG does mention a restoration, which is actually so minor that it can scarcely be discerned through the holder. The most recent Very Fine to cross the auction block was a VF 30 that realized $18,000.
