Description

Serial Number One, Courtesy Autographed $5 1891 Treasury Note

Fr. 362 Serial Number One Courtesy Autographed $5 1891 Treasury Note PCGS New 62.
This is the only serial number one 1891 Treasury $5 and the only one that can exist as the numbers were run straight through. The note is gorgeous, with fresh original paper surfaces, more than acceptable margins, and absolutely perfect color of the inks and paper on both sides. This would be an important note simply for the Friedberg number, due to its outstanding grade, but the addition of the B1 serial number turns it into a paper money treasure that only one collector can have the opportunity to own. The John Burke courtesy autograph, which appears to the left of the seal, adds additional interest to a note that already has everything going for it. The vignette of General Thomas carries photographic-like sharpness and his stern facial expression adds credibility to his nickname, "The Rock of Chickamauga." Most Civil War scholars consider Thomas to be the most underrated of the Union generals. This almost certainly happened because his entire Civil War career was spent in the western theater. The note, as might be expected, has a wonderful pedigree, tracing back to Lot 289 in Barney Bluestone's sale of the Albert A. Grinnell sale in the 1940s. It remained off the market until 1963 when Dean Oakes, our current consignor, purchased the note in a New York auction sale.
