    Description

PCGS 65PPQ Fancy Back 1890 Fr. 361 - One of the Finest Known

Fr. 361 $5 1890 Treasury Note PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
Wide margins, along with great ink and paper colors are attributes of this $5 Treasury note that features the ornate back design and has a small red Treasury seal. General George Henry Thomas' portrait appears at center. Although Thomas does not remain as famous today as many of the other Civil War generals, his leadership during the Battle of Chickamauga earned him the nickname, "The Rock of Chickamauga," as his forces managed to hold their ground despite the fact the Confederates broke through both flanks. PCGS has only graded two at this level and two above. No 65 from either grading service has reached the auction block since 2014. From 2011-2014, one sold each year. They brought prices in a narrow range between $13,800 and $15,250. This note has great visual appeal and will probably not reach quite that level as a few more have been graded, but it is certainly likely to enter five figures.
