    Gem Appearing Fr. 311

Fr. 311 $20 1880 Silver Certificate Choice About New. We sold this note once before in September of 2000 where it was described: "This Steven Decatur $20 Silver is beautifully centered on both sides. It has all its full original ink color, and to separate it from the Gem New grade, the very lightest of folds." In that sale, the note was estimated at $11,500-up and realized $15,400. Although Fr. 311 is not a particularly rare number, with just under 130 examples known, virtually none are high grade. One of the few reported, uncirculated pieces auctioned in November 1999 for $61,600.
