A Sharply Dressed DecaturFr. 310 $20 1880 Silver Certificate PMG About Uncirculated 50.
Series 1878 and 1880 $20 Silvers feature the portrait of Stephen Decatur, the U.S. Naval Commander from 1779-1820. While commonly referred to as "Decatur's," these notes are set apart from all other United States currency for their back design. The word SILVER is spelled out across the back with each letter surrounded by intricate lathework. This design, which reminded the bearer that it was backed by silver dollars in the Treasury was printed with an iron-oxide rich, black brown ink not seen on any other notes printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. It is a departure from the Green Back color and is a favorite of currency collectors.
Four healthy margins frame the deeply printed and uninterrupted design. A fold left of center is the only one of any significance that can be seen through the third party holder. Decatur's are usually seen in well-circulated condition and this piece should rank right up at the top of the condition census for this number. Though an example is listed in the census as Uncirculated, none have been graded or reported by the grading services above AU 55 and nearly four years have passed since another AU was offered at auction. Passing on this example may result in another five year wait for a piece that may not even have the eye appeal exhibited here.
