One of the Finest of Only Ten Examples KnownFr. 308 $20 1880 Silver Certificate PCGS Very Fine 30.
Track & Price lists only ten examples of this Friedberg number. It is an important example of the very scarce 1880 Silver Certificate issue with the printed countersignature of Assistant Treasurer Thomas Hillhouse. Included with the lot is a letter from pioneer collector and dealer William Philpott, Jr., dated October 3, 1959 addressed to "Art" and signed "Phil." The letter is wholly handwritten on Philpott's Texas Bankers Association stationery. The 1959 price was $550, an immense sum for a piece of paper money at that time. PCGS has graded three examples of Fr. 308s, with this piece the finest of the three. PMG has graded six examples, the best of which is a 35. The most recent sale of a Fr. 308 listed by Track & Price is a VF 20 which we sold in September 2006 for $29,900.
