    Description

    Lightly Handled 1886 $10 Tombstone

Fr. 293 $10 1886 Silver Certificate PCGS Choice About New 58.
173 examples are listed in Track & Price for this popular and colorful Tombstone type. The nickname was assigned as Vice President Hendricks died in office and shortly after his death he was memorialized by having his portrait placed on the $10 Silver Certificate. By either happenstance or black humor, the engraver placed his portrait in a tombstone-shaped frame, the only use of that shape on any US note. This example has exceedingly bright colors, primarily very large margins, although it is somewhat tight along the right side, and wonderful eye appeal.
