    America's Most Beautiful Federal Banknote

Fr. 268 $5 1896 Silver Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
The "Educational" 1896 series was a radical departure from United States Federal currency designs, both past and future. These beautiful notes with their dynamic themes stand out like the St. Gaudens gold coins commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt. The series' highest issued denomination (essays were prepared for the $10 faces) features Electricity Presenting Light to the World based on Walter Shirlaw's painting and engraved by G. F. C. Smillie. Other face features were designed by Thomas Morris, who also conceived the back design featuring Lorenzo Hatch's portraits of Grant and Sheridan. PMG notes a "Corner Tear," which is at the lower left. Boldly printed and sharp. Ex: Coin Galleries, June 1990 sale, 376.
    From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
