Serial Number 1 $2 Windom Note

Fr. 245 $2 1891 Silver Certificate PCGS Extremely Fine 40.
We first brought this note to the market in our January 1998 auction, where it was described, "The existence of this serial number 1 Windom note had been conjectured due to the existence of a few other low numbers, but had never been confirmed. It recently surfaced at a show in Minnesota, William Windom's home state. The note is separated from the Gem grade only by three light folds that were apparently the result of storage. It has absolutely no soiling, and it retains its full, bright colors of both papers and inks, as well as its original paper surfaces and embossing effect. This is the first Windom note to have been printed, and the only serial number 1 Windom note that exists, as the serial numbers were run straight through the signature change to Fr. 246, the only other Windom number." At that auction, it realized just over $12,000 on a $7,500 estimate. It was offered again in February 2000, bringing $30,800, then topped the $50,000 mark to settle at $55,200 when offered in our 2005 September Long Beach Auction. With a strong auction record history and its allure as the first of the Windom's, a number like that is easily possible again this evening.
