Rare PMG Graded Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ Fr. 244

Fr. 244 $2 1886 Silver Certificate PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
This Large Brown Seal Hancock is not a truly rare note, but it is quite a bit scarcer than the normally seen Fr. 242, with nearly 500 Fr. 242's known against fewer than 200 Fr. 244's. The numbers become even more disproportionate in the higher grades, as two long runs of Uncirculated 242's are known, but 244's in top condition are truly rare. PMG, for example, has graded 61 Fr. 242's in Gem 65 or higher, but has only assigned grades of 65 or higher to seven Fr. 244's. The last 65 crossed the auction block in 2011 and realized just under $11,000, a figure that is likely to be exceeded for this Gem specimen this evening.
