    Z10-90Z High Grade Set

Double Digit Set Fr. 233 $1 1899 Silver Certificates Nine Examples PCGS Graded.
The Grinnell Collection had notes all around the serial numbers in this lot, but somehow this nonet went to another collector. Each lovely example exhibits paper originality that includes strong embossing of the serial numbers. The serials and grades are, Z10Z Gem New 66 PPQ, Z20Z Gem New 65 PPQ, Z30Z Gem New 65 PPQ, Z40Z Gem New 66 PPQ, Z50Z Superb Gem New 67 PPQ, Z60Z Gem New 65 PPQ, Z70Z Very Choice New 64 PPQ, Z80Z Gem New 65 PPQ, and Z90Z Gem New 65 PPQ. Each of the serial numbers are composed of older font digits and thus are termed replacements even though these notes did not replace misprints. We must commend the paging machine operator in this case for the meticulous attention to detail in applying the serial numbers. One, two, and three-digit serial numbers for type notes were applied by hand using older font numerals with the help of a paging machine in the early part of the twentieth century. For additional information on replacements see blogs on the website and also the article in Paper Money, Society of Paper Money Collectors, Vol. LI, No. 5, Whole No. 281, September/October April 2012, pages 378-384, "Identification of Series 1882 and 1902 National Bank Replacement Notes Printed in the 1903-1915 Period." The years have been adjusted to 1903-20 since the article was written and type note replacements are mentioned. This is a set worthy of the finest of collections. (Total: 9 notes)
