The Third Finest Graded Example Of Only Thirteen Pieces Known

Fr. 97 $10 1875 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 30.
"This lovely note comes from our auction of the Tom Flynn Collection in April 2008, where it was described, 'One of the rarest of all the Legal Tender notes, with a total census of only thirteen pieces, none of which has ever been graded Uncirculated. In fact, neither of the two grading services has ever seen an AU of this number. This VF 30 is the highest yet graded by PMG. Tom acquired this important note from our November 1992 auction of the University of Missouri holdings. The record price for a Fr. 97 was for the uncertified AU which we sold in January 2006 for $34,500. The highest certified example to reach the market was in that same sale where we sold a PCGS 35 for $25,875. Two years later, in a far more sophisticated market for rare notes, we expect the price to fly right by those numbers.' The number of pieces known has now dropped to twelve, as one of the notes listed in the Track & Price census has proved to be a duplicate of another listing. In every sale, some notes far exceed their estimates, while others sell for unaccountably low prices. This piece realized only $23,000, a screaming bargain in a sale where few notes failed to fetch considerably over their estimate. With only a dozen pieces known for this Friedberg number, it would not surprise us at all to see this example now reach or exceed..." That was the description we used when we sold this note in our January 2009 auction. Since that time, Track & Price has added one note, raising the total census to 13. This remains the highest graded piece at PMG. PCGS has graded a 35 and a 45. A classic rarity and one of the few notes in this auction that has a chance of surpassing the price realized at the Flynn auction.
