Description

Fr. 96 $10 1869 Legal Tender PMG Uncirculated 62.
This interesting note is holdered in a multi-note encasement with one of the signed explanation letters written by Bion H. Barnett (1857-1958), who was the founder of the Barnett Bank in Jacksonville, Florida. This bank started operations as the Bank of Jacksonville under the guidance of William Boyd Barnett, who was the father of Bion. According to the explanation letter, the first loan made by the Bank of Jacksonville when it opened on May 7, 1877 was to a Mr. C. W. Blew. When due, Mr. Blew repaid it with fifty 1869 $10 Legal Tender Notes. The notes sat undisturbed in the bank's vault for almost seventy years, during which time the bank became the Barnett National Bank. One Rainbow $10 from the Blew repayment and one explanation letter were distributed to each of the bank directors present on May 7, 1947 in order to commemorate the first loan issued seventy years earlier. This would certainly be a highlight in any paper money collection. The discoloration mentioned on the third party label is minor.
