    Stunning Superb-Gem Rainbow $2

Fr. 42 $2 1869 Legal Tender PCGS Superb Gem New 68PPQ.
At our January 2006 auction, we used the following description for this incredible note: "We sold this note in September of 2001 with the following description, 'With no qualifications, this is simply the finest example of this type that this cataloger has seen, handled or otherwise encountered in 40 years of paper-money immersion. A good friend and client of ours, who recently sold a 30-year collection of Superb Type Notes privately, spoke for decades about his frustration with his never being able to locate an 1869 Rainbow Deuce that met his standards. He never met this note. Large Size Type, whatever the issue, simply cannot come finer than this piece. That every possible technical pinnacle should apply to a type that is challenging to find even Choice is nothing short of a paper-money miracle. This cataloger, who no longer impresses easily, is rapt. If another Fr. 42 exists that can hold a candle to this piece, we await its appearance.' At that sale, the note was estimated at $10,000-up, a figure that was mocked by a number of fellow dealers. The note realized $15,400 with four participants above the $10,000 level. Five years later, PCGS seems to agree with our glowing description of this piece. It is the first 68PPQ that we have seen for any significant Large Size type. And while a census is not yet published, we are anticipating that this piece is without peer. We rather suspect it will remain at the top of the census." Since that time, no 68 has been graded by either service, and this note remains the single top-pop piece for both services combined.
