Excessively Rare Fr. 17d - Finest of Four KnownFr. 17d $1 1862 Legal Tender PMG About Uncirculated 50 Net.
A gorgeous example of this very rare $1 Legal Tender variety where the Type 1 original Treasury Seal (no "spokes" around shield) has been printed over the serial number. To date, just four notes have been recorded for this Friedberg number with other three pieces all grading no better than an impaired Fine. That is not the case with this beautiful note which, in all likelihood, was Lot 28 in the fabled Grinnell sale held on November 25, 1944. This pretty specimen has the initial appearance of a Choice New note however close inspection does reveal some repair work in the right margin. Nevertheless, the ink colors remain as vibrant as the day they were applied to the paper and original embossing is readily seen on the back. This is a great early Legal Ace fit for the finest of collections. With one of the impaired Fine specimens fetching $10,575 in our October 2012 auction at the Dallas ANA, our estimate may well prove very conservative.
