    Description

Seldom Offered Fr. 178 $100 Legal Tender

Fr. 178 $100 1880 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 25.
A most attractive example of this early $100 Legal Tender note that is one of only seventeen examples in the census. Five of the seventeen pieces are permanently impounded in Federal Reserve Bank collections, the Smithsonian, and the American Numismatic Association collection. With a third party grade of Very Fine 25, this note ranks as one of the finest of the few pieces still available to collectors. This piece, despite some light stains mentioned by PMG, boasts vivid colors and design details along with sharp corners and four healthy margins. Looking back at auction records over the past dozen years, any example of this rare Friedberg number graded at the Very Fine 25 or better level has realized well over $20,000.
