    Description

    Likely Finest Friedberg 17 Known

Fr. 17 $1 1862 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 30 EPQ.
Tom Flynn originally acquired this very rare Friedberg number in a Stack's May 1992 sale. At the time it was one of only three examples known and the finest of the three, ultimately realizing $7,500, a significant amount for a type note at the time. Its next appearance was part of Tom Flynn's holdings in 2008. It realized $48,875 in that auction and the numbers behind its rarity were included in the description: "Since that time, a few additional pieces have turned up, with the likely count now in the area of ten known. It is a particularly difficult note to get an accurate count, as they are very, very often misattributed. The Track & Price census list 32 examples, which is without question out of whack. Of the 32 examples, eight are listed with their series number, but only one of those eight is listed as Series 1. All Fr. 17s are from Series 1, meaning seven notes can be immediately knocked off the census. It is also a certainty that the great majority of the other notes on the Track & Price census are mislistings." No examples have been offered at auction since this piece was last presented in 2008. A correction to the PMG population report has knocked the finer Extremely Fine 40 mentioned in the original description off the list, making this Very Fine 30 EPQ the finest of just seven pieces thus far enumerated in the PMG and PCGS population reports.
