Iconic Spread Eagle $100

Fr. 167a $100 1863 Legal Tender PMG Choice Very Fine 35 Net.
Joseph P. Ourdan's "Spread Eagle" design used on 1862 and 1863 $100 Legal Tenders is one of the most iconic in United States Paper Money. The heraldic spreading of the wings was a show of strength, against the Confederacy in a perilous war. As one of the top 100 designs according to Bowers, there is far too few quality notes for collectors to satisfy demand.

This design type has six significant varieties and Friedberg numbers which vary depending on the Series Date, February 25, 1862 or March 3, 1863, the obligation on back, number of serial numbers, and the logos or monograms from the American and National Bank Note Company. This example features the NBNCo. logo and the second obligation and two serial numbers, and is the featured plate note in The Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Federal Large-Size Notes, 1861 - 1929 by Chambliss-Hessler.

The paper here is stunningly original with a nice red seal and serial number. The margins are full but typically small for the large face design. On back is a deeply printed second obligation and ornate lathework. A couple of closed pinholes account for the restoration comment from PMG, which cannot be compared to most other restored notes that have seen far more work done to them.
