Fr. 163 $50 1880 Legal Tender Gem New. A hitherto unknown example of this ultra-rare number. The previous census was a mere four pieces, two of which are permanently impounded within the Federal Reserve system. One of the remaining two pieces has been off the market since 1973, and the other, a well circulated About Fine, was sold by us almost five years ago for just under $20,000. This piece is a spectacular, originally embossed, broadly margined example with great color and perfect print quality. With several collectors vying to complete sets of U.S. currency by Friedberg number in the highest grade possible, this piece becomes a necessary purchase by anyone serious enough to attempt to collect in this manner. With this example the finest by several grades over the next contender, and considering that only one collector can bring this trophy home, we certainly believe that this will easily surpass the six figure mark, and may well exceed that number by a considerable margin.
