Well Circulated But Handsome 1874 Fifty - Fr. 152 PMG 25

Fr. 152 $50 1874 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 25.
We sold this note twice before with the most recent appearance in 2004 before the two grading services came into existence. In its most recent appearance, we described it "Fr. 152 is a one-number type, with about three dozen examples known in all grades combined. When we last sold this note in May of 1997, it had been new to the census and it was described, 'While this new piece to the census receives the rather low technical grade of Fine, we expect it will realize far in excess of what a normal Fine would bring. The margins and color are nothing short of spectacular and with the exception of a well-repaired margin nick, the note is totally original. In the hands of the proper restorer, this nick, which does not reach the design, could be re-repaired to completely disappear. The two large red "L"s and the seal are brighter red than we have seen on a number of the notes reported to be uncirculated.' That description still holds. While Fine is the right grade, this note certainly looks much better." The note currently resides in a PMG VF 25 holder which mentions a "Minor Repair." That repair is the nick in the right margin mentioned in the description above. A great looking note for the grade with sharp print quality and exceptional color. The total census is just under 50 at this point with well more than half of them grading 20 or below. In 2004, this note brought right around $5000. There are no recent sales of comparable notes, but we would expect a price nearly double what it previously brought.
