    Lovely and Colorful $50 Rainbow

Fr. 151 $50 1869 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 30.
This design type proved challenging for Chambliss to acquire in a grade and level of eye appeal that was consistent with his set. In terms of eye appeal, this Very Fine 30 exceeds the eye appeal of most nearly all other Very Fines. The margins are as large as one will find for the type, with a nice swath of blue running down the left side of the note. Each of the design elements is bold and largely uninterrupted by wear or folds. The portrait at the lower right of the note is that of Henry Clay. Clay was the thrice unsuccessful perennial presidential candidate between 1824 and 1844. He had also served as Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams in the late 1820s. At left is the vignette, The Return of Peace.
The stunning "Rainbow" issues were short-lived due to very convincing counterfeits, the $50 among the most deceptive. We have no doubt that a number of the notes listed in the census as extant are in fact counterfeits that trick even the most experienced of collectors and dealers. While Very Fine graded examples are not rare, they are quite scarce with this eye appeal. This note serves as the plate note in Chambliss-Hessler's, The Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Federal Large-Size Notes, 1861 - 1929.
