Nicest Fr. 139 at Auction Since 2005

Fr. 139 $20 1880 Legal Tender PCGS Extremely Fine 40.
A mere 20 different serial numbers are documented in Track & Price and one of those is outside the reach of collectors as it is part of the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank Collection. Also, this is easily the second rarest Friedberg number of the Alexander Hamilton design that includes numbers 127-147m. PCGS has graded only one Fr. 139 higher, a 55, and none equal. Over at PMG, they have not seen an example equal or higher. The current note was acquired by our consignor at our January 1999 auction. We described it then as XF having broad margins, excellent centering on both sides, and flashy colors. It is plated on page 69 of the Chambliss-Hessler reference. Today, this is the nicest Fr. 139 to be offered since the PCGS 55 crossed the auction block in 2005.

    Estimate: $6,000 - up.
