    Bold Fr. 118 "Bison" Note

Fr. 118 $10 1901 Legal Tender PMG Extremely Fine 40 EPQ.
The "Bison" is one of the most esteemed large size currency types and was issued across nine Friedberg numbers (Fr. 114-122). This is an earlier example. Once subject to debate, the central bison vignette is Pablo facing left (or to the west since the note has a western expansion design concept) engraved by Marcus Baldwin. Lewis and Clark portraits are at each end respectively as engraved by G.F.C. Smillie. On the back, allegorical Columbia stands tall. A bold note, lightly circulated with tri-folding seen from the back, but the face has the appearance of higher grade. This 1993 purchase from Frank Nowak is in a grade very popular with collectors.
    From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
