Beautifully Margined and Brightly Colored Superb Gem Jackass Sawbuck

Fr. 107 $10 1880 Legal Tender PMG Superb Gem Unc 67 EPQ.
A very handsome type with wonderfully contrasting colors. The spiked red seal on this type has been referred to as red, orange, peach, and salmon, as well as some others I am sure we have missed. With this one, we are going to go with deep salmon. In any event, the bold seal, whatever shade it may be, provides a beautiful contrast to the deep blue serial numbers. This basic design type ran from 1869 all the way up to the beginning of the Bison notes in 1901. Along the way, it picked up the nickname "Jackass" which sticks to this day. There is a small eagle at the bottom center which, when viewed upside down, morphs into the head of a jackass. Of all the examples graded at both services combined, only four are at or above the 67 level of this note. It has been on the market twice before in the past decade, both times with us. We sold it in October of 2012 for $7050 and again in January of 2014 for $7600. With no new examples reaching this grade level recently, we would expect the note to easily exceed its 2014 realization.
