M11A-M99A Set with Provenance Back to Grinnell

Double Digit Set Fr. 37 $1 1917 Legal Tenders Nine Examples PCGS Graded.
Serial numbers and grades in this lot are M11A Gem New 65PPQ, M22A Choice New 63PPQ, M33A Very Choice New 64PPQ, M44A Very Choice New 64PPQ, M55A Apparent Very Choice New 64 with a small edge tear in the right margin, M66A Superb Gem New 67PPQ, M77A Gem New 66PPQ, M88A Gem New 65PPQ, and M99A Choice New 63PPQ. The M11A note was lot 766 and M99A was lot 857 in the second auction session of the Albert A. Grinnell Collection held on March 10, 1945. That duo was later combined with the other seven double digits and all nine pieces were offered as lot 75 in the Lester Merkin auction of February, 1971. Their next trip to the auction block was as lot 677 in the William P. Donlon September, 1977 auction. It is now known that one, two, and three-digit serial numbers for type notes were applied by hand using older font numerals with the help of a paging machine in the early part of the twentieth century. All of the serial numbers of the nine notes in this lot have the older font and their serial numbers are slightly skewed from being applied by hand. A very historical and informative set that will be greatly admired by its new owner. (Total: 9 notes)
