    Description

Fr. 1225h $10,000 1900 Gold Certificate PMG Very Fine 20 Net.
The note is uniface and there are perforation cancellations at the left in the portrait area that states this note is, "Payable only to the Treasurer of the U.S. or a Federal Reserve Bank." This example has the usual water staining seen on almost all of these notes. The staining places this piece at the five alarm Washington, DC Old Post Office fire on the night of December 13, 1935. Firefighters tossed many of these notes along with other combustible material from the windows of a large filing room on the sixth floor. The lucky onlookers below were able to pick the notes up and go on their way. For further details on this conflagration and its aftermath, see "Add a Fr. 1225 Gold Certificate to Your Collection," Paper Money, Society of Paper Money Collectors, September/October 2009, Whole No. 263, pages 382-83. This example has "Assistant" at top center blacked out and an added "Deputy" at bottom center. Minor varieties of these notes exist that are not detailed in the Friedberg reference. The Net grade is due to repaired and reconstructed and stained. Most of these are stained due to the efforts of the firefighters. We see the repairs, but using the term "reconstructed" may be a little harsh. Our archives disclose that we had a PCGS Apparent VF 20 example bring $1645 in April 2013.
