Fr. 1225h $10,000 1900 Gold Certificate PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The first auction appearance that we know of for this unredeemable $10,000 occurred in 1989. We cannot find any folds through the third party holder during our examination. We did observe embossing and it is particularly strong behind the upper right serial number and the black box printed over "Assistant" at center. The penned signature of F.J.F. Thiel remains bold on this piece that carries a "Nov. 22, 1916" printed date. A moisture spot affecting the rubber stamped endorsement on the back is a clue that this example was a witness to the multi-alarm Washington, DC Old Post Office fire on the night of December 13, 1935. Whoever pocketed this note after it fluttered down to the street, did an excellent job in protecting it. The usual roulette cancellation for this number is found in the area of Jackson's portrait. Since April, 2020 we have auctioned four other PMG 63 Fr. 1225h pieces and they have all realized prices in the $4,080 to $4,680 range.
