Brilliantly Colored 1882 $500 Gold Certificate - One of Only 53 in the Census

Fr. 1216b $500 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
No uncirculated examples are known of this high denomination Gold Certificate, with most of the examples out of a total of 53 hovering right around this grade. The outstanding feature of this note is its ink color, both face and back. The margins are also excellent and the eye appeal is terrific for a VF 30. On the down side, PMG has noted, "Closed Pinholes," as well as, "Annotation." The annotation is a partially erased pencil number at the lower right of the face which would definitely disappear completely. The closed pinholes are quite typical for the type and very unimportant. In January of last year, we auctioned another example in this same grade that realized $26,000. With this note's minor problems, somewhat offset by its excellent eye appeal, we would anticipate a slightly lower realization.
