    Finest Auction Offering in a Decade - A Bright and Vibrant Fr. 1208

    Fr. 1208 $100 1882 Gold Certificate PCGS Choice About New 55.
    A great note that was lot 555 in the March 10, 1945 session of the Albert A. Grinnell Collection. It made another Grinnell appearance at the "clean-up" session of March 8, 1947 as lot 216. Our consignor was able to purchase it 52 years later at our January 1999 auction. The only handling we observed on this attractive $100 Gold, both then and now, are two minor corner tip folds. The example in this lot is one of the nicest you will find on this rare Friedberg number that has a population of only 31 in Track & Price with just 27 of those in private hands. PCGS has not graded a single example equal or higher, while over at PMG they have examined only two equal and just one higher, a 58. We also noticed that our current offering is the highest graded Fr. 1208 to appear at any auction in the last ten years. All of this makes for a highly desirable note in a seldom available high grade.
