Ex-Philpott PMG Graded Gem Uncirculated 66EPQ $20 Technicolor

Fr. 1180 $20 1905 Gold Certificate PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. This is a magnificent Type note with a pedigree to match, having been off the market for forty years after having been purchased by our consignor from pioneer currency collector (and sometime dealer) William A. Philpott. Mr. Philpott (he was never referred to by any other name) served as the long-time Secretary to the Texas Bankers Association, and giving him unparalleled access to material which we can only dream about today. By 1966, when our consignor obtained this note, Mr. Phil was in the twilight of his career, and was selling off many of the notes which he had accumulated since the 1920's. Mr. Philpott long boasted that he dealt only in the finest material, and his letter, which accompanies this note, emphasizes the point. Dated February 7, 1966, it reads, in part, "Here are the two gold certificates, the quality of which, I am sure, will make your collector heart glow....Fr. 1180, $20, Gold Certificate, series of 1905, serial 2480168, perfect." It continues, "In this superb condition perhaps not more than 25 are in existence today. I owned a cut sheet of this rarity: two went to a collector in North Carolina, one to Amon Carter, Fort Worth; and you now have the D or bottom note of the sheet. Feel certain you will be proud to own and display these quality specimens. They have been in my possession for forty years." This gorgeous note has now been slabbed by PMG, which assigned it a grade of Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ and notes its Philpott collection provenance on the holder. If you are searching for only the finest, this beauty is a note you should make every effort to bring home tonight. As Mr. Philpott wrote over four decades ago, the quality here "will make your collector heart glow."
