Fr. 1180 $20 1905 Gold Certificate PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
A Technicolor note from the small run of high-grade $20 1905s that William Philpott purchased from a friend who had previously worked at the Treasury Department. The notes were not consecutive pieces, but all were from a pack that began with serial number A4043. This example sports serial number A404303. It is a beauty that exhibits perfectly why Fr. 1179 and 1180 are deemed as "Technicolor" notes due to the use of red, yellow, and black ink on their faces. These Gold Certificate Friedberg numbers were current in the latter half of the first decade of the twentieth century, while "technicolor" as a color motion picture process was invented in 1916. "Technicolor" would go on to make steady inroads into the film industry over the next several decades. As United States paper money collecting was also in its infancy at this time, one astute collector from the era was able to make an analogy between these colorful notes and color film and that appropriate pet name has remained in use ever since. The last high-grade example of Fr. 1180 that we offered was a PCGS 64 with serial number A404331 that realized $54,050 at our Central States auction last April.
