Fr. 1179 $20 1905 Gold Certificate PMG Superb Gem Unc 67
EPQ.This is simply the highest third party graded Fr. 1179 without any equals. The colors, margins, and paper surfaces are all superb and it also exhibits original paper wave and strong embossing of both serial numbers on the back. A truly gorgeous $20 where the bold black, yellow, and red inks readily lead credence to the "Technicolor" moniker. This note has crossed the auction block only twice in the last 40 years that we know about. The first time was in William P. Donlon's twelfth and final mail bid auction of March 31, 1978. The second time was at our April 2012 CSNS auction where it realized $138,000 on a $120,000 and up estimate. We will keep the estimate the same this time around, but we fully expect a higher result as collectors appreciate top pop notes even more so today.
