Gem Fr. 37a $1 "Transposed Signatures" Note
Fr. 37a $1 1917 Legal Tender PMG Gem Uncirculated 66
An engraving error note where both the engraved signatures and governmental offices of Treasurer of the United States John Burke and Register of the Treasury W.S. Elliott are transposed. Regulations at the time required that the name of the Treasurer should appear at the lower right half and the name of the Register should appear at the lower left half of a note. The names and positions are switched in this case. This engraving error was originally reported to the collecting community by George Blake on page 43 of the February, 1921 The Numismatist. This error only appears on face plate 1519. PMG has graded a meager four examples equal with none higher. We had another PMG 66 EPQ Fr. 37a realize $2,880 in January, 2019. This well preserved ace should hammer in that neighborhood, if not exceed it.
