    High-Grade 1891 One Hundred Dollar Silver Certificate

    Fr. 343 $100 1891 Silver Certificate Very Fine-Extremely Fine. Traces of original embossing remain on this brightly colored James Monroe $100 Silver. The note has the sharpness and ink color of an uncirculated piece, and although signs of circulation can easily be seen, the note has tremendous visual appeal. About 20 examples are known in all grades combined, with at least four of them permanently impounded and several others whose whereabouts are unknown. This note is ex-William Philpott, and then to Jim Thompson. It was last on the market as the Thompson note, when Stack's sold it in 1992 for the then very strong price of $5400. It has appreciated mightily in the past dozen years, and in its appearance this evening, it will likely realize . . .
